JOB FAIRS
Job fairs will help you get ready for a job, even if you do not
land an interview. Job fairs are a convenient way to learn about a variety of
jobs. They are also a chance to learn what qualities employers want in new
hires. And if you are lucky, you may impress recruiters so much that you
will be called for an interview.
Time is usually a precious commodity for job seekers, and job
fairs offer the opportunity to distribute resumes, meet recruiters and gather
information about numerous companies in one place.
Companies attend job fairs for only one reason: They need to
hire employees. Many employers have applications ready to hand out…it’s a
win-win situation for everyone. But don’t wait until the last hour to arrive.
If you arrive late do not expect to have time to visit all the booths.
-
Be prepared to fill out job applications. Bring information with work
experience, references, addresses and telephone numbers with you.
-
Bring several copies of your resume. It is best to have
copies for each employer you are visiting.
-
Smile and greet the interviewer with a firm handshake.
-
Be aware of body language; use good posture, look confident
and use eye contact.
-
Dress in good taste. Head-to-foot cleanliness and neatness
create a positive first impression.
-
Be prepared for an interview. Be prepared to answer
questions like: Tell me about yourself. Why are you interested in this type of
work? What are your skills and how do they relate to this position?
-
Nervousness: It is normal for many people to be nervous. But
remember, employers are here because they need employees. Be your professional
self.
-
Show good communication skills. Be interested and enthusiastic.
Prepare a few questions to ask like:
-
Would you describe a typical workday and projects I would be involved
in if I were working in this position?
-
For this position, what characteristics would you like people to have?
-
What type of training program does this company have?
-
What are major goals of this company in the near future?
